Description
12 and 13 The Groves is a pair of town houses designed to appear as one, built around 1800. The houses are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and feature a grey slate roof. They rise three storeys and have five windows across the front. The entrance includes a four-panel door with a simple overlight set within a Roman Doric stone case.
On either side of the entrance, there are three-storey brick bows, each with two recessed sash windows per floor. The ground and first floors have 12-pane windows, while the second floor has 6-pane windows. Above the entrance, there is a 12-pane recessed sash on the first floor and a 6-pane sash on the second floor. The first floor features a sill band, and the second-floor windows have painted stone sills. The ground and first-floor windows are topped with wedge lintels, and there is a frieze and eaves cornice just above the second-floor windows. The roofs of the bows curve forward, while the main roof is hipped. There are two brick chimneys symmetrically placed on the roof.
To the right of the entrance, there is a Roman Doric pilaster porch in front of a narrow yard for No. 13, which appears to be an afterthought but is consistent with the overall character of the building. The interior has not been inspected.
