Description

The boundary wall and gate piers of Grosvenor Park, located from Love Street at its junction with Union Street to Billy Hobby's Well by Grosvenor Park Terrace, were built between 1865 and 1867. Designed by John Douglas and funded by the 2nd Marquis of Westminster for Chester City Council, the wall is constructed from squared snecked sandstone rubble and granite.

The structure features a plinth and replaced railings between Love Street and the north-west gateway, which has square granite piers that taper to an octagonal section beneath ornate moulded finials. Between the north-west gateway and the west gateway, opposite St John Baptist churchyard, there are two chamfered granite piers that also diminish to an octagonal section towards blunt-pointed caps. The rock-faced squared snecked sandstone wall reaches up to 2 meters high and steps down along the slope of the path towards the River Dee.

A south-west gateway was added to provide access from the Groves and the Suspension Bridge. The south wall, which is partly a retaining wall, stands approximately 1.6 meters high. The south gateway leading to Grosvenor Park Terrace features two chamfered granite piers that taper to blunt-pointed octagonal caps, along with a plinth and replaced railing between the gateway and Billy Hobby's Well.
