Description

Garden Court is an early 19th-century house, originally built as a single dwelling and later subdivided into two houses. It is located on Canal Street, Chester. The building is constructed of brick, now rendered, with a grey slate roof. It is two storeys high and has five windows. The left house has a modern porch on the left side and three recessed sash windows on each floor, now with four panes of glass; it features a ridge chimney. The right house is slightly taller and includes a door made of two panels and two glass panes, with a round-arched fanlight above. A tripartite Palladian sash window, from which the glazing bars have been removed, sits to the right of the doorway. A first-floor sill band runs along the facade. Above the door is a four-pane sash window, and to the right, a Palladian sash window. The building has a cornice leading to a hipped roof. The central entrance bay projects, and a central chimney is present. The interiors have been altered but retain some early 19th-century doors and ceiling cornices. Before its division around 1980, it was likely occupied by the warden of the Hospital of St John Almshouses on Upper Northgate Street.
