Description

This structure is part of the City Walls in Chester, which includes Roman masonry and dates back to probably the early 2nd century. It forms part of the north wall of the legionary fortress and was refortified between the late 11th century and early 12th century. In 1702 to 1708, it was converted into a raised promenade and has since undergone repairs.

The wall is constructed from coursed red sandstone Roman ashlar, along with medieval and later coursed rubble. There are two segmental-arched openings in the wall: one opposite Pemberton Road and a narrower one with an iron gate opposite Canning Street. The outer face of the wall features two sections of the lower part of the Roman wall that stand proud of the medieval wall. The western section is approximately 18 meters long and up to 5 courses high, while the eastern section is about 16 meters long and up to 8 courses high; both sections have repositioned cornice stones and are separated by the Canning Street archway.

The medieval wall has a twice weathered plinth that is partly built on top of the Roman wall. A stone from the Roman base course can be seen 2 meters east of the wing-wall of the Northgate. This length of the wall measures approximately 316 meters long and 2 meters wide.
