Description

The Church of St John is a Grade II* listed building, originally built as an extraparochial chapel in 1815. It is constructed of brick with a slate roof and features a rectangular Georgian design. The west end has pedimented gables and brick pilaster strips at the corners, flanking a central timber doorcase with a moulded pediment. A brick band runs along the eaves, and gable modillions are present. The east end is plain, while the north and south sides are symmetrical, each featuring five windows with stone sills, brick heads, and iron glazing bars, along with two windows on either side of the door. Above the door is a blind window, and the door itself has a moulded timber doorcase. The brick plinth is chamfered and has moulded stone caps at the corners. An octagonal open cupola is located at the west end, topped with an ogival lead roof and a finial.

Inside, the church has iron galleries with timber rail around three walls, supported by iron columns. At the west end, there is a pedimented panelled timber niche with scroll brackets above the door. The church features a similar iron altar rail and front to the pews, with two box pews at the sides of the altar designated for the patrons, the Broughton and Kenyon families, which have brass name plates. The panelled timber reredos is divided into three parts, displaying the Lord's Prayer and the Credo on the left and right, with an excerpt from Exodus in the central panel. A moulded cornice continues as the base of the gallery, and there is an octagonal pulpit and reading desk. The church is also adorned with two brass chandeliers dated 1817.
