Description
The gates, plinths, and railings at the Top Lodge to the former Aston Hall were likely built in the 1790s and are attributed to the architect Samuel Wyatt. The structure features seven sandstone piers and plinths, along with wrought-iron gates and railings. To the left of the lodge, there are two piers, and a plinth projects in a semicircle in front of the lodge. The entrance includes double carriage gates flanked by piers, with a foot-gate and pier on each side. A damaged rail on the plinth forms a quadrant with an end pier to the right of the gates. The plinth has a camber-topped coping, and the piers are monolithic up to the base of the cornice, featuring moulded plinths, a recessed panel on each face, and moulded cornices. The gates have plain dog bars between the bottom rail and the lock rail, with acanthus finials above the lock rail and ornate finials on the main bars. The railing to the right of the gates has had its finials removed, and the railing to the left has also been removed. Samuel Wyatt worked on the estate around the time that Humphry Repton replanned the park in 1793.
