ASTON BY SUTTON C.P., ASTON LANE (south side), Top Lodge to former Aston Hall (known as The Monkey Lodge.)

Gate Lodge, stated to be 1790's and attributed to Samuel Wyatt, but looks early C19. Lined stucco on plinth of large ashlar sandstone blocks; graded grey slate roof with lead rolls to ridges and hips. 1 storey, symmetrical to drive (right) to former Aston Hall. Projecting canted porch with 2 antae, entablature and 2 pilasters. Door with 1 lower panel and 14-pane margined glazed upper panel. Recessed sash in plain round-arched opening (6 panes to lower sash; 8 to upper sash) in each oblique face of porch. A similar sash in each wing, but with architrave (no imposts) to opening. All sashes have projecting stone cills. Frieze has roses in relief between scroll-shaped brackets supporting cornice. 2 corniced chimneys, each with 2 posts, small extensions to rear. Interior not inspected. Samuel Wyatt was employed on the estate around the time (1793) that Humphry Repton replanned the park (Aston Papers at Aston Lodge).
