Description

The Church of St John the Baptist, built in 1815, features some work from the 16th century. It is constructed of English garden wall bond orange brick, with visible lines of vertical timbers and a wall plate in the nave. The roof is made of Welsh slate. The church has a five-bay nave and chancel that are in one range, along with a south porch and an octagonal louvred bellcote. A dentil brick cornice adorns the structure, and the windows of both the nave and chancel are simple, featuring semi-circular brick heads. The gabled porch has a pair of half-glazed doors, while the east window is lancet-shaped with two wooden mullions.

Inside, the church is very plain, with a raised chancel and a wooden chancel screen. The interior features partly exposed kingpost trusses with diagonal braces, all heavily cusped. There is a circular stone front dated 1635 and a doorway with twisted balusters dated 1698. A painted memorial plaque to the Whitehead family is likely the work of Randle Holme III.

The former chancel collapsed in 1802, and it is reported that Sir J T Stanley of Alderley rebuilt the church by 1810 when he sold the living, as noted in Ormerod's "History of Cheshire" from 1819.
