Description

The Barnston Memorial is a Grade II* listed obelisk located on Churton Road in Farndon, dating from around 1858. It is slender and made of yellow sandstone, featuring decayed and partly removed cast iron railings. The base of the obelisk shaft and the plinth have concave mouldings that enhance its slender appearance. At the corners of the plinth, there are four lions in a crouching position, symbolically mourning. Three quadrants of the heavy funerary rail remain intact between the lions.

On the front of the plinth, the name "BARNSTON" is carved in plain projecting capitals above a circular plaque adorned with a wreath. The left side of the memorial bears an inscription that reads: "ERECTED IN MEMORY OF ROGER BARNSTON ESQ OF CREWE HILL, MAJOR AND BREVET LIEUT.COLONEL OF HER MAJESTY'S 90TH LIGHT INFANTRY, CB AND KNIGHT OF THE LEGION OF HONOUR AND OF THE ORDER OF MEJDEDIE BY HIS TENANTS AND FRIENDS. HE SERVED IN THE CRIMEAN WAR FROM THE 5TH DECEMBER 1854 AND WAS PRESENT AT THE SIEGE AND FALL OF SEBASTOPOL AND ALSO IN THE INDIAN MUTINY CAMPAIGN IN 1857 IN WHICH HE SUFFERED A SEVERE WOUND WHILE GALLANTLY LEADING AN ASSAULT AT THE RELIEF OF LUCK NOW ON THE 18TH NOVEMBER 1857 FROM THE EFFECTS OF WHICH HE DIED AT CAWNPORE ON THE 23RD DECEMBER 1857, AGED 31 YEARS, AND WAS INTERRED IN THE MILITARY CEMETERY OF THAT STATION."
