Description
Numbers 1, 1A, 1B, 2, and 3 Sandown Terrace is a mid-19th century terrace of three town houses, now used as houses and flats. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brown brick with stucco dressings and a grey slate roof, and is designed in an Italianate style. The front elevation has two storeys facing the road and three storeys facing the gardens to the south, with towers at each end that rise one storey higher. There are eleven windows to the front, including those in the towers.
The ground floor features three projecting Roman Doric porches, the central one slightly more prominent and with paired columns and full entablatures. Stucco bands delineate the porch bays, party walls, and corners. The doors are four-panel affairs with plain fanlights. The ground floor windows are round-arched 11-pane recessed sashes, with two windows between each pair of porches and a single window in each end bay of the main block. The ground floor of each end tower has been altered; an inserted doorway replaces a previous triple window on the right tower, and a carport roof fronts the left tower, recessed from the main block. A cornice band runs along the first floor, with a stucco sill band above, featuring balustraded panels beneath each 12-pane sash. All sashes have stucco architraves; those above the porches have ornate entablatures. The towers, which are set well back, have pilastered tripartite 3-pane sashes with shell tympana. There is a pediment above the external bay. A frieze and cornice are supported by brackets to the main block. Four chimneys with stucco cornices are present at the base. The second floor of each tower features a quintuple pilastered round-arched 3-pane sash. Architraves are present on the brick panels around the sashes at the ends.
The south-facing garden elevation has a cast-iron verandah with a balcony to the first floor. The central element comprises four windows, with the first and fourth set back from the second and third. Projecting two-bay pavilions extend to each side, and the towers are recessed. The ground floor has been altered, with French windows and sashes to the upper storeys, detailed similarly to the front. The interior was not inspected, however, original stairs and other design elements remain in numbers 2 and 3. The ground floor to the gardens forms a basement to the front, accessed by two external stone stairs leading to areas with cast-iron area front rails and simpler rails to the stairs, the basement walls being stuccoed.
