Description

The obelisk cenotaph to George Marsh is located in Chester and was erected between 1888 and 1898. It was funded by Nessie Brown in 1888 and completed by Henry Stolterfoth, the Mayor of Chester, in 1898. The cenotaph features a polished granite plinth and obelisk set on a freestone ashlar base. The north face bears the inscription "TO THE MEMORY OF GEORGE MARSH MARTYR WHO WAS BURNED TO DEATH NEAR THIS SPOT FOR THE TRUTHS SAKE APRIL 24TH 1555." The east side is inscribed "ERECTED BY NESSIE BROWN A.D. 1888," while the west side states "GEORGE MARSH BORN AT DEAN COUNTY LANCASTER A.D. 1515." The south side notes "HENRY STOLTERFOTH MAYOR 1898."
