Description
The barn at Kinderton Lodge, dating from the late 17th century, was originally a shippon and is now used as a barn. It is constructed from small red bricks in English Bond and has a roof covered with corrugated asbestos-cement sheets. The barn features a five truss-bay design, with the loft floor removed from the central section, while the northern section retains its floors and completes a "T" shaped plan.
Notable architectural features include narrow arrow-slit openings with splayed reveals and round pitch holes, as well as segmental arched openings with rebated reveals and stone hinge blocks, which are now blocked. Inside, the barn has trusses with a tie beam, lower collar, and two studs between the collars. The original wall plates and gallows bracket supports are present at the ends of the tie beams. There are two runs of original purlins, a ridge tree, and wind braces. The northern section is supported by very heavy oak beams that hold softwood joists, and there is a single collar truss without struts.
