ASTON BY SUTTON C.P. ASTON GRANGE

Nos. 1 and 2 Bankfield Farm.

II

Former farmhouse, now 2 dwellings, late C16 and early C17 cased in brick early C19 and altered. Brown brick, English garden wall bond; grey slate roofs. 2 storeys. 3 attached front gables; long ridge parallel with back. Central gable narrower than that to each side; symmetrical. Door has robust pedimented case in basket-arched recess. Edwardian or later canted 1-storey bay window to each side of door. Gauged-brick camber-arched openings contain 3 late C20 replaced casements to upper storey. Stone cills. Rounded rear left corner of flush sandstone with quoins. Interior. No. 2 has altered full crucks in portion under rear roof; ovolo beams at front and chamfered beams at rear of lower storey. No. 1 is stated to have similar beams. The wall between the central and left gable, temporarily stripped of plaster during 1960's, is stated to have diamond or chevron panels of Elizabethan type. Interior of No. 1 not inspected. A substantial proportion of the C16/C17 oak frame is likely to have been preserved in both cottages. The sequence appears to be: central gable wing Elizabethan; rear wing C16 or C17; side front gable wings late Georgian.
