Description

Bankfield Farm is a former farmhouse that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates from the late 16th century and early 17th century, but was cased in brick in the early 19th century and has undergone alterations. The building is constructed of brown brick in English garden wall bond and features grey slate roofs. It is two storeys high with three attached front gables and a long ridge that runs parallel with the back. The central gable is narrower than the two side gables, creating a symmetrical appearance. The front door is set in a robust pedimented case within a basket-arched recess. On either side of the door, there are Edwardian or later canted one-storey bay windows. The upper storey has gauged-brick camber-arched openings that contain three late 20th-century replaced casements, with stone cills. The rear left corner is rounded and finished in flush sandstone with quoins.

Inside, No. 2 features altered full crucks in the area under the rear roof, with ovolo beams at the front and chamfered beams at the rear of the lower storey. No. 1 is reported to have similar beams. The wall between the central and left gable, which was temporarily stripped of plaster during the 1960s, is said to have diamond or chevron panels of Elizabethan style. The interior of No. 1 has not been inspected. It is likely that a substantial proportion of the 16th and 17th-century oak frame has been preserved in both cottages. The sequence of construction appears to be: the central gable wing is Elizabethan; the rear wing is from the 16th or 17th century; and the side front gable wings are late Georgian.
