Description

53 and 55 Egerton Street are a pair of town houses and formerly a shop with accommodation, built between 1829 and 1833 and subsequently altered. Number 53 has a panelled front door with a simple overlight within a timber surround, and a flush 16-pane sash window to both the ground and first floors. Number 55 has a shop front likely dating from around 1870. Its features include a painted stone plinth, a panelled stallriser, a door consisting of two fielded panels and two glazed panels above a single-pane overlight. The door and shop window are framed by stop-chamfered pilasters, and the shop window itself has four panes separated by colonnette mullions. A stop-chamfered fascia and cornice is supported by a pair of modillion brackets with end brackets. Above the shop front is a canted oriel window with two, four, and two panes respectively, a panelled apron, chamfered mullions, a frieze, and a moulded cornice. In April 1992, inspection revealed a party wall after the demolition of the house formerly adjoining the right-hand side. The interior remains uninspected.
