Description
The War Memorial Well House is a well-house, now sealed, built around 1919 at the expense of the tenants of Aldersey Hall Estate. It features a tall sandstone plinth, oak-framed walls, and a Westmorland green slate roof. The structure is T-shaped with gables on the front and each end. It has stopped ovolo chamfers on the posts and beams. At the center, there is a covered well, with a cast iron pump, likely from the late 19th century, on the left side, and oak seats supported by sandstone on each side. This well house was constructed as a memorial to Captain Hugh and 2nd Lieutenant Mark Aldersey, who were killed in action in France on March 10, 1918, and November 1, 1917, respectively.
