Description
The tomb of John Bassett, located approximately 8 metres north of the west bay of the nave of the Church of St. Oswald, was built in 1847. It is constructed from red sandstone and features a table tomb design. The slab is weathered on each side and has shallow hips, with moulded corner stones. Each end panel displays a raised oval motif with radial mouldings, while the side panels include a semi-circular recess with a rose in a circlet sunk in each spandrel. The southern side of the tomb has inscriptions in the recess that read: "To the memory of JOHN BASSETT ESQUIRE COLLECTOR OF HER MAJESTY'S EXCISE FOR THE CHESTER COLLECTION who departed this life at MALPAS on the 8th May 1847 aged 58 years." Additionally, within the perimeter of the recess, it states, "Erected by the Officers of the Chester Collection," and above the recess, "As a mark of respect."
