Description
The Church of St Mary, built in 1833 with a porch added around 1914, is located on Aldersey Green Lane in Coddington. It is constructed of sandstone and features a grey slate roof. The church consists of a nave with an undifferentiated chancel, comprising five bays. A stone bellcote is topped with a short, square, concave spire, which has a crenellated parapet and two-light bell-openings. The west gallery has two single-light windows, while the sides of the nave are adorned with two-light windows in a Perpendicular style. The east window is a four-light design with a battlemented transom. The church is characterized by strongly-expressed buttresses and the spire, giving it a distinctive appearance typical of Commissioners' churches. The gabled porch includes an inscription dedicated to Canon Francis Coulman Royle, who served as Rector for 49 years until his death in 1913. There is also a north vestry. Inside, the church features plastered walls and a panelled roof supported by timber arches in a Perpendicular style, resting on angel corbels. The interior includes a contemporary oak altar rail, a gallery held up by three stone arches in the Perpendicular style, and armorial bearings on a contemporary font.
