Description

Numbers 45 and 47 Street, and numbers 51, 53, and 55 Row are a group of two street-level shops and two Row shops with associated accommodation, dating to the early to mid-19th century and subsequently altered. They are built of Flemish bond brown brickwork, with a grey slate roof running at a right angle to the street, and a hipped front. The building is four storeys high, including street level and the Row. Modern shopfronts are present at street level.

The Row front features brick end-piers and a central pier, with a tapered cast-iron Doric column in the center of each bay. A simple cast-iron railing with stick balusters and a plain rail runs along the front. A sloped boarded stallboard extends 2.22 meters from front to back, above a flagged Row walk. The early-20th century shopfronts to the Row have panelled timber stallrisers to numbers 53 and 55, and windows with slender, moulded mullions, rounded corners to the panes, and carved spandrels. A plaster ceiling is present in number 51, and panelled plaster ceilings in numbers 53 and 55. A wood fascia defines the Row-top bressumer. Painted stone sills and cambered false wedge lintels are above altered two-pane recessed sash windows; two windows are on the third storey, and four on the fourth storey. The third storey of numbers 53 and 55 has an altered, inserted, barge-pane timber oriel. A lateral chimney is set back to the north.

The interior of number 45 Street is a butcher’s shop with early-20th century tiling and an office. The remaining shops and upper storeys have no visible features of particular architectural interest. The buildings are included on the list for their group value.
