Description
Number 49 Street and Number 57 Row is a Grade II listed undercroft shop, Row shop, and accommodation, currently functioning as an undercroft shop and office at Row level and above. It was rebuilt in 1891 by WM Boden on the site of a former undercroft and town house. The building features painted brick and timber framing with plaster panels, topped by a brown tile roof that runs parallel to the street.
The structure has four storeys, including street and Row levels. It has a modern shopfront with a covered entry to Feathers Lane on the north side. The Row front includes brick end-piers and a timber rail supported by shaped splat balusters, with a boarded sloped stallboard that is 2.16 meters deep. The Row walk is finished with quarry tiles. The modern quasi-Georgian office front features a door with six fielded panels and a radial-bar overlight, along with fielded sub-panels for a small-pane window and a modillion cornice. A bressumer at the Row top is supported by shaped brackets, and there is a pendant above a segmental timber arch over the entry.
A hipped lean-to roof, resting on ornate brackets, projects beneath an entry-bay cross casement and intersects with a six-light canted oriel on the main bay. The third storey wall is made of painted brick. The timber-framed fourth storey, which is flush over the entry, jetties boldly on shaped brackets over the main bay. It features a row of ornate small panels across both bays, a two-pane casement that stands proud on brackets above the entry, and a six-light square oriel on the main bay. The jetty has arch-braced side panels and a one-pane window in each return. The windows have leaded glazing above transoms, and there is a coved jetty on the main-bay front gable. Inside, the fourth storey has partitions from 1891, while the lower storeys are lined. The external appearance of this building is similar to Nos 3, 5, and 7 Street and Row, which were also designed by the same architect.
