CHESTER CITY (IM) BRIDGE STREET No 37

(Formerly listed as BRIDGE STREET AND ROW (East side) No.37 Street)

GV II

Number 37 Bridge Street comprises part of a medieval undercroft, now a shop, which was incorporated into a Neo-Jacobean style brick building designed by Edward Hodkinson and erected in 1864 for the landowner, the second Marquis of Westminster. The Row level and the upper storeys have a separate entry on the National Heritage List for England. In 2022, the undercroft was occupied by a shoe shop.

The shop, accessed at street level, comprises a short undercroft of medieval origin but which has been re-fronted and lined internally in the late C20.

The late-C13 to early-C14 rear portion of the undercroft is now part of number 39 Bridge Street. The Row and upper storeys are in separate tenure.
