Description

Numbers 61 and 63 Watergate Street and Numbers 71 to 77 Row comprise a pair of former undercrofts and town houses, now adapted as an undercroft shop, two Row shops, and two flats. A section of medieval stone undercroft walling remains. A large chimney at the rear west corner of Number 63 is likely of 16th or 17th century origin. The facade was constructed in the early 18th century and was restored in the early 1970s when the remainder of the building was rebuilt.

The exterior is painted brick at street level, painted sandstone and brick to Row level, and rendered above. The rear chimney and west gable are of old brick. The building is three storeys high, including street level and Row level. Double half-glazed doors are located on the street to the left of centre. There are two 6-pane windows to the left and, to the right of centre, a glazed door with two camber-arched 4-pane windows. The Row gallery has stone piers to the left and centre, and a rebuilt brick pier to the right, with Tuscan half-column responds. Two Tuscan columns are present in each bay, supporting the bressumer. The Row shopfronts are modern. A plain stone string runs above the rendered bressumer. A recessed central sash window on the third storey has two near-flush sashes on each side, with rendered sash-boxes. Rusticated quoins are present, and a moulded cornice supports a rendered parapet. A wrought-iron bracket, bearing a key – the locksmith’s sign – is attached to Number 73 Row. The rear west gable is brick-coped and has a paired brick string on its east side. The chimney is tapered, with terracotta detailing at the top.
