Description
The Stables is a stable block associated with Darnhall Abbey, built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from red English garden wall bond brick and features a slate roof. The building is single-storey, with two-storey cottages and a two-storey entrance tower. It forms a rectangular courtyard, with an entrance gate tower positioned at a 45-degree angle at the southwestern corner.
On the northern front facing the courtyard, there are central double carriage doors with a basket arch and a keystone that features a figurehead. Above these doors is a shallow pedimental gable with an octagonal clock face. At the ridge, there is an octagonal bellcote with round-arched openings and pilasters at the corners, topped with a dome. To the left of the carriage doors, there are three bays, including a central door, while to the right, there is a door on the left and three windows to the right.
The eastern front has two bays, featuring a window at the corner and a door to the right, with two carriage doorways further to the right. This arrangement is mirrored at the projecting wing to the left, which connects to the gate tower. The gate tower has a round-arched gateway with ashlar springers and three arched lancets on the first floor. Adjoining this is a range of three cottages on the side facing the coach house, which have wedge lintels over the doors and windows, stone sills, and hipped dormers.
