Description
Winsford War Memorial is a First World War memorial located in the churchyard to the south-west of the Church of St Chad, which is listed as Grade II*. It is positioned adjacent to the churchyard walls, also listed as Grade II, and near a scheduled and Grade II-listed cross base.
The memorial features a stone Latin cross pommée, adorned with carved decoration at the ends of each arm. The cross-head is elevated by a decorative collar that includes carved scroll work, resting on a tapering, octagonal shaft with a moulded foot. This is set atop a square plinth with a moulded foot, which is placed on a two-stepped, square base. The plinth and base display inscriptions and names in incised lettering.
The main inscription on the plinth reads: "TO THE HONOUR AND GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE BRAVE/ WINSFORD MEN WHO LAID DOWN/ THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 19." A secondary inscription is located directly below at the foot of the plinth, stating: "FOR ALL THESE SAILORS AND SOLDIERS MEMORIAL SERVICES/ WERE HELD IN THIS CHURCH."
The memorial is situated within a gravelled area that is enclosed by stone kerbs.
