Description

The Old Primary School block at Verdin Comprehensive School is a former primary school, now part of a secondary school, built in 1906. It is constructed of red Flemish bond brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The building is single storey.

The street front has three central bays that project slightly beneath a gable. This central gabled section is supported by four ashlar pilaster buttresses with swept offsets and ball finials. The windows have ashlar surrounds, with the central window featuring 4 x 5 panes and the lateral windows having 3 x 5 panes. The gable is topped with ashlar coping and includes a keyed ovolo in a square ashlar piece at the center. The gable also has consoles on either side and an open pediment that contains the Delamere arms, with the datestone located below. On either side of the central section, there are windows of 3 x 5 panes with flat semi-dormer heads supported by stone brackets, and at the far left and right, there are windows of 2 x 4 panes, also with ashlar surrounds. The right-hand corner of the building features quoins, and there is an octagonal bellcote at the center of the ridge, which has a splayed lower body, louvred openings in the middle, and terminates in an octagonal spire.

To the left of the main block, there are two projecting gabled wings, with the right wing projecting slightly more than the left. Both wings have stone bands, coping stones, and pyramidal finials. Each wing features a central window of 4 x 5 panes, flanked by lateral windows of 3 x 4 panes. The building is included for its group value.
