Description

This is a mid-to-late 17th-century farmhouse, now a public house. It is built with a red English garden wall bond brickwork, under a slate roof. The building has an E-shaped plan. The front has a gabled, two-story projecting porch on the left side of the center, featuring a round archway containing a plank door with nail head decoration. Above is a two-light arched window. To the right of the porch is a three-light cambered-headed window on the ground floor, with a similar three-light window above, set within a cambered relieving arch. A projecting wing is to the right of this, featuring a three-light cambered-headed window on the ground floor, a smaller similar window above, and a timbered gable. To the left of the porch are three French windows on the ground floor, with a three-light window directly above. A wing on the left side has a cambered-headed ground floor window and a three-light window above. The right-hand side of the building has two large chimney breasts, one on either side of the center. The rear features gabled wings on the right and left, with cambered-headed three-light ground floor windows. The right wing has a three-light first floor window and a timber-framed gable with whitewashed brick infill. The left wing has a band of two bricks depth slightly above the level of the imposed two-light cambered-headed window at first floor level. A 20th-century outshut extends from the center, with double doors on the right and a gable above. The house and a nearby barn were originally owned by Vale Royal Abbey.
