Description

Bowmere Cottage is a house dating from around 1830, located on Bowmere Road in Tarporley. It is constructed of brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a grey slate roof. The house is two storeys plus an attic, and originally had a symmetrical three-window facade. A replaced half-glazed four-panel door with a leaded fanlight, dating to around 1900 and set within a round-arched opening with a plain cement surround, is located centrally. To the right of the door is a French window with two three-pane leaves and three-pane side-lights, topped by a pulvinated cornice. A later, single-storey canted bay window, likely from the late 19th century, was added to the left of the doorway and features cast-iron small-pane casements. The upper storey has nearly flush sixteen-pane sashes with wedge lintels and projecting stone cills, all painted, along with a painted eaves cornice. Attic windows are set within the gables. The chimneys are made of brick. A rear wing has no noteworthy features.

Inside, original six-panel and broad-board doors remain, some with HL hinges. The staircase rises in a straight flight per storey and has an open string with shaped brackets, a moulded hardwood rail, a turned hardwood newel, and painted stick balusters. The building has group value, contributing to the character of the area.
