Description

The Manor House is a house dated 1585, located on High Street in Tarporley. It is timber framed and rendered, topped with a slate roof, and consists of two storeys. The entrance front is nearly symmetrical, featuring three gables and projecting lateral gabled wings. The left wing has moulded brackets supporting a jettied first floor and gable. This gable showcases decorative timber framing with ogees, quarter-circles, and fleurs de lys, along with a central coat of arms. An inscription on the moulded bressumer states, "Ralph Done Esquyer, the Lorde of this place, was an eade to this buldying in ever case. John Wytter 1586." Below the first floor, a 19th-century casement window bears the inscription, "Feneys quoth Jhon Newsome hathe kept hys promes just, In buldying of thys house in August, anno 1585." The right side features a similar jettied first floor and gable, both rendered. The west side has 19th-century two, three, and four-light windows, along with plain bargeboards and posts on the gables. The rear of the house includes extensive 19th-century additions, such as a cheeseroom on the left and a lean-to in the center. Inside, there is small framing on the ground and first floor walls with some wattle and daub infill. The ground floor rooms have chamfered and end-stopped ceiling beams, while the first floor features Queen post trusses. The house was built for Ralph Done of Flaxyards, Tarporley.
