Description
The monument to Lady Delamere at Monk's Well Cottage is a structure dated 1852, made of red sandstone ashlar. It features an octagonal canopy that shelters an octagonal monument. The entrance front has a stepped surround with three central steps and flower beds on either side, backed by an ashlar retaining wall with low square piers at the corners. The canopy is supported by diagonal buttresses at the angles, and it includes an arched doorway with a monogram and date in the sprandrels. Surrounding the other sides are arched cusped openings above low walls. A string course runs above, topped by a parapet inscribed with the words: "HER CHILDREN/ARISE UP AND CALL/HER BLESSED: HER/HUSBAND ALSO. AND/HE PRAISETH HER/PROV: XXXI. VER. XXXVIII." The roof above is stepped and made of ashlar, featuring a cross at the apex.
Inside, the monument has an octagonal lower body with a linked coat of arms in a quatrefoil shape opposite the doorway. A string course divides this lower body from the upper body, which has four diagonal buttresses framing a panel opposite the doorway and at the rear. This panel features a copper plaque inscribed in Gothic lettering that reads: "In grateful acknowledgement/of a debt of love which can/never be fully repaid/This memorial was raised/to Henrietta Elizabeth Lady/Delamere, the most excellent of/Wives and the best and kindest/of Mothers by her Husband/and her children/MDCCCLII." Above this is a gablet at the rear.
