Description
The Nun's Grave Cross is a Grade II listed structure located in Winsford, within the former Vale Royal Park. This cross features a combination of stonework from different periods, dating from the 14th to the 17th centuries. The base is believed to be from the 14th century and is multi-faceted, appearing to have originally been a column base. It is octagonal with semi-octagonal shapes on four of its faces. Above this, there is an octagonal shaft that supports a rectangular cross head. The cross head includes cusped ogee-arched niches that contain statues depicting the crucifixion and various saints, with crockets adorning the upper section and the lower body. Surrounding the cross, and laid on the ground, are additional fragments of moulded stone from the demolished abbey building, which are not included as part of the listed item. The materials used are red and yellow Bunter and Keuper Sandstone.
