Description

This is a mid-19th century terrace of five cottages built for the Trent and Mersey Canal Company, likely housing canal workers. The cottages are constructed of Flemish bond orange brick with a Welsh slate roof and four brick chimneys. The rectangular group has a nine-bay front, two stories in height, and a wooden cornice. Each cottage features a 12-pane sash window with flat, wedged stone heads and stone sills. The doorways have basket-arched wooden doorcases with columns, four-panelled doors, and blocked fanlights. A semi-circular headed entrance leads to a passage between numbers 34 and 36, with a blank window above. Number 42, set back on the left end, is an earlier construction, characterized by 16-pane sashes under wedged lintels and a simpler doorway. The Trent and Mersey Canal runs directly behind the terrace.
