Description
Rose Cottage is an estate cottage built around 1780 for Richard Pennant, 1st Baron Penrhyn, likely as part of the improvements to the Winnington Estate, with Samuel Wyatt as the architect of the Hall. The cottage is constructed of red-brown English garden-wall bond brick and features a gabled Welsh grey slate roof. It is one storey with an attic and has a double-fronted design.
The main entrance has a door with six fielded panels on the inner face, topped by a pointed-arched fanlight with intersecting tracery. There are casement windows on either side, each with two 4-pane lights beneath a transom, and a pointed arch above with Y-tracery. Each side of the main block has a small wing with a blank pointed-arched opening filled with a grey slate panel and a corbelled brick verge leading to a lean-to roof. The main block has an ovolo brick eaves cornice and replaced bargeboards at each end gable, which feature a tall two-flue flush chimney with projecting bands. Above the lean-to roof of the wings, there are two casements with two 2-pane lights in each gable.
At the rear, there is a later lean-to outshut that lacks special features and includes a 4-pane landing casement. Inside, the ground floor has doors with six fielded panels, a simple dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and a moulded rail, all of which are intact. The attic contains broad-boarded doors, and both floors are fitted with iron HL hinges and blacksmith-made latches.
