Description
The Brunner Mond and ICI Alkali Division War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with alterations made after the Second World War, designed by Darcy Braddell. It is made of Portland stone and bronze and features a square central obelisk on a four-stepped base.
Located opposite Winnington Hall, which is a Grade I building restored by the same architect, the memorial stands at the entrance to the Winnington Works. The obelisk is tapered and has a moulded stepped capstone topped with a bronze and glass eternal flame, set on a pedestal adorned with ram's heads and lion's feet. Four stylized lion sculptures are positioned at the corners of the base.
The main inscription commemorates the men of Brunner Mond & Co Limited who fell in the First World War from 1914 to 1919, and the men of the Alkali Division of Imperial Chemical Industries Limited who fell in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945. The names of the fallen from the First World War, believed to number 291, are listed on the side faces by their place of work, by unit, and in alphabetical order, without ranks. The names from the Second World War are found on the rear face, arranged similarly, with some later additions below. Due to the softness of the stone, the carving has become worn in places.
