Description
The western entrance to the Barnton Tunnel on the Trent and Mersey Canal was built in 1777 by James Brindley for the Trent and Mersey Canal Company. The entrance features a canal tunnel arch made of partly washed English garden wall bond blue brick, accented with red sandstone dressings. The facade is curving and includes a parabolic stone arch at its center. There is a plain band at ground level and a plain parapet with rounded stone coping. The structure is finished with stone and brick pilasters at either end.
