Description
Saltersford Locks are river navigation locks built in 1874 for the Weaver Navigation Company. They are constructed of red sandstone and limestone ashlar in bands, featuring wooden gates and cast-iron fittings. The locks are large and narrow, arranged in parallel, each with a pair of wooden gates. The gates are operated by Stoney's patent Pelton Turbines, which include circular cover plates with dated segmental hatches bearing the founder's name, HANNA, DONALD & WILLS, PAISLEY. The operation is facilitated by handles on bollards topped with balls. At both ends of the locks, there are pairs of semaphore signals to manage waterway traffic. These locks are similar to those at Dutton Locks, Acton Bridge, and were constructed to replace an earlier lock on the original Barnton Cut, which was excavated between 1832 and 1835.
