Description
Barn End is a pair of cottages that have been converted into a single dwelling. It dates from the 17th century or earlier and has undergone extensive alterations, particularly in the late 20th century. The building features a mix of timber and cruck framing with brick nogging, as well as sections made of sandstone. The exterior is now whitewashed and rendered, topped with a thatched roof and whitewashed stacks.
The cottage is single storey with five bays, situated on a sloping outcrop of rock, and there are ten steps leading up to the front entrance. To the right of the front door, there are eight panels of large square framing that are exposed. The front door is a four-panel design with glazed upper panels. The windows are horizontal sliding sashes with glazing bars, with two located to the left of the front door and four to the right, set in alternate panels above the mid rail.
Inside, the timber frame includes cruck trusses in the partition walls of the bedroom and the current bathroom, as well as along the line of the firebeam in the living room. The interior retains old doors and exposed ceiling timbers throughout.
