Description

The Chapel and Chaplain's House, located about 7 yards east of Sutton Hall, date from the 16th or 17th century. They are constructed from coursed rubble and feature a stone slate roof. The building has both single and two-storey sections. The entrance front includes a single-storey chapel on the right, which has a gable and double 20th-century doors at the ground floor. To the left of the chapel is an outshut for the Chaplain's house, which has an unfenestrated wall, followed by a lychgate that features a lean-to porch roof and a moulded, pointed arch.

On the right-hand side, there are two and three-light windows with square wooden mullions in the upper wall. At the rear, the eastern gable end of the chapel is unfenestrated on the left, while the Chaplain's house on the right has two and three-light ground floor windows on either side, along with a doorway. The first floor has two three-light windows.

Inside, the ground floor rooms of the Chaplain's house have chamfered ceiling beams. The first floor features queen post trusses with four wind-braced purlins and a ridge beam, similar to the roof of the chapel. The chapel was endowed by the de Sutton family in 1524 and remained a Catholic chapel under the Davenport and Bellasis families until 1716, when it was converted to Anglican use by Thomas, Earl Falconberg of Newborough. It ceased to function as a chapel in 1760 but was restored to its original use as a Catholic chapel in the 1950s.
