Description

Bridge Number 43 over the Macclesfield Canal, built in 1831, is a road and roving bridge designed by engineer William Crosley. It is constructed from roughly coursed and squared Kerridge stone, with smaller blocks above the string course. The bridge is built in two sections: a high road bridge with a sloping parapet above the string course, which is not accessible from the towpath, and a roving bridge that carries the towpath across the canal, located against the southern face of the structure. The roving bridge features an elliptical archway with voussoirs and a keystone, and has a semicircular plan with a gently graded ramp.
