Description

Dorfold Dairy House is a late 17th-century building, although it appears to date from the late 18th century. Originally a farmhouse associated with Dorfold Hall, it is now a private house. The building is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a roof of tiles and old slates. It has three storeys and an attic, and a "U" shaped plan. The entrance and garden fronts each feature three bays. The front door is made of six panels and has a rectangular overlight with glazing bars arranged in a St. Andrew's cross design. A pitched lead-covered hood, supported by shaped brackets, sits above the door. Windows are predominantly metal casements in wood frames on the ground and first floors; a leaded lattice window is located at the second-floor level. The garden front (east) features 2-to-4-light flush casements with glazing bars and segmental heads, a 4-light leaded lattice casement in a dormer, a leaded light with rectangular glazing at the second floor, and a small timber light in the attic. The west elevation has flush casements with segmental heads and glazing bars, some with very small panes. The interior contains bevelled beams and exposed ceiling joists across three levels. Wide-boarded ceilings and four-panel doors are complemented by H.L. hinges. An oak staircase features twisted tapering balusters, heavy rectangular newels, a large moulded handrail and spandrel panelling. Oak panelling, some of Jacobean style, has been re-used from elsewhere in the house on the first-floor landing. The roof structure incorporates large trusses with a collar, king post and struts.
