Description
Heath House, comprising numbers 19 and 20, is a pair of houses built in the mid-18th century. The exterior features roughcast over brick with a slate roof, and the building stands three storeys tall with a five-window range that is unequally divided between the two dwellings—one has a single room frontage, while the other has three. The doorways are positioned towards the center of the front elevation, separated by a window, with two windows to the left and one window to the right. Each house has six-panelled doors set in pedimented cases. The inner windows are 12-pane sashes, while the outer windows are 16-pane sashes on each floor. The attic features low windows with six and eight panes, with the left-hand window being blind. There is a parallel rear range and a long wing extending from the rear of the right-hand unit, with axial and end wall stacks.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the building has several associations, including its former use as the Cann Office, where weights and measures were tested. It was also the home of Edward Higgins, an 18th-century highwayman who is mentioned in Elizabeth Gaskell's "The Squire's Tale" and Thomas de Quincey's "The Highwayman."
