Description
The Pillars, located 140 meters southeast of the Garden Cottage at Adlington Hall, are a pair of gate piers dating from the mid-18th century, built for Charles Legh. They are made of buff sandstone ashlar and feature slightly tapering plain square bodies that rest on tall plinths with moulded tops. The capstones, which are well-carved with unicorn's heads, were relocated to the wall of the stable courtyard around 1960. Originally, these piers were quite grand and marked the main south approach to the new stable block. However, a realignment of the turnpike road in 1801 left them isolated from the main route.
