Description

The lead statue and carved unicorns' heads are located on a section of wall behind the fishpond to the east of Adlington Hall. This feature dates from the mid-18th century and was created for Charles Legh, although the statue was moved from the Wilderness garden and the unicorns' heads were relocated from the tops of the pillars around 1960.

The large lead statue depicts a reclining nude, bearded male figure resting on his elbow and tipping a gadrooned urn forward. It is now set on a rough stone plinth and is said to represent Father Tiber. Behind the statue, on the brick wall, are two former capstones from gate piers made of buff sandstone, each featuring finely carved unicorns' heads that face each other. These unicorns' heads are the emblem of the Legh family.
