Description
Adlington Hall Mews, originally built as a coach house and stables in 1749 for Charles Legh, is now converted into 8 flats. The building features Flemish bond red brick with buff sandstone dressings and has a hipped roof made of Kerridge stone-slate. It is a two-storey structure with a symmetrical nine-bay south front. A stone band runs at the ground storey sill level, topped by a modillion cornice. The central three bays project forward under a triangular pediment and are flanked by giant order Tuscan pilasters that support a plain stone frieze. The central large semi-circular headed coach entrance includes a keystone with a datestone and the Legh monogram. The flanking bays contain 6-pane windows with flat wedged channelled heads below and 4-pane windows above. A circular light is set in a stone surround within the pediment. The remaining bays have similar 4 and 6-pane windows, with two featuring iron balconies. The architectural motifs continue in shorter ranges at the rear. In front of the coach entrance, there is a mounting block made of four stone steps with a brick core. This building is the earliest of Charles Legh's classical brick constructions and is a prominent feature along the old south approach that led from the Pillars.
