Description
The gates and gate piers to the Wilderness garden at the north end of Lime Avenue of Adlington Hall were built in 1688 for Thomas Legh V. They are constructed from buff gritstone ashlar. The piers feature channelled rustication and stand on low moulded plinths. Each pier has a projecting moulded capstone with a flat top. Between the piers is a pair of wrought iron gates made of closely spaced bars that are square in section and pointed at the top, with some scroll work along the top rail. The right-hand gate includes a smaller door, while the left-hand gate has the inscription "IW 1688" on the top bar. These gates were erected, and the lime avenue was planted, to celebrate the arrival of William of Orange by a colonel of his militia.
