Description

Cobweb Cottage is a Grade II listed building that dates back to the early 18th century. It was originally a pair of cottages, believed to have replaced earlier structures on the same site. The cottage features a brick nogged timber frame and brickwork, topped with a tiled roof. It is a single storey with an attic, consisting of one bay each and single storey lean-tos on the gable ends.

The facade and gables are constructed with small framing, showcasing St Andrews Cross bracing over the ground floor windows, and four-way bracing in groups of four panels, creating storey height St Andrews Crosses. The timber frame is visible at window sill level, with 18th-century brickwork below that has been painted to simulate timber. The lean-tos and the rear wall are made of brick.

The cottage has boarded doors set in heavy dowelled frames with external architraves and later added pitched hoods. It features 2-light flush casement windows with glazing bars, located in pitched dormers at attic level, which also have barge boards. The eaves of the lean-tos are similarly adorned with barge boards. The building displays exposed wall plates and rafter feet, while the party-wall stack has a heavy cap and diagonally set flues, with one-brick-wide pilasters at the angles.

At the rear, there are remains of a 17th-century timber framed farm building, constructed with small framing and passing braces, which belonged to the earlier cottages on the site. Inside, the cottage features small section chamfered beams in an 18th-century style, exposed ceiling joists, cottage staircases with winders, boarded doors, and exposed purlins and rafters.
