Description

Ridge Hall Farmhouse dates to 1580, with subsequent 17th and 19th century additions and alterations. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof. The original two-bay portion is on the right-hand side, distinguished by ashlar quoins. A blocked doorway is situated at the ground-floor level on the left, alongside a blocked two-light stone window to the right. Above, two similar blocked windows are present on the first floor, with a rectangular date stone set between the floors at the centre. All the blocked windows feature chamfered mullions. In the centre of both floors, 19th-century two-light windows have been added. To the left of the original section is a later 17th-century addition, flush with the earlier portion and featuring stone quoins at the corners. This section has three two-light casement windows at both ground and first floor levels, with a gabled porch positioned between the second and third bays from the left, containing a 17th-century studded wooden door. The rear of the farmhouse has a 20th-century addition on the left, while the remainder of the rear elevation has 19th-century windows.

Inside, a 17th-century staircase with open treads rises in a single flight, featuring barley-sugar twist balusters with vase bases, matching barley-sugar twist newel posts, a moulded handrail, and a panelled tread plate. A further blocked mullioned two-light window is found in a bathroom at the rear of the dated section. The site where the house stands is surrounded by a moat, and it is believed that the original, larger house was largely destroyed during the Civil War.
