Description
The private chapel located north-west of Swettenham Hall was built in 1852. It features a blue brick wall on the north-facing side and red brick in Flemish bond with a slate roof, comprising three bays. The chapel has a stone plinth, and the entrance to the nave, located in the north-west gable, consists of a pair of oak doors set in a chamfered stone-dressed opening with a single shaft and a Gothic head. Above the doors is a rose window designed with six trefoils. The nave windows are pairs of lancets in stone-dressed openings, featuring a common mullion and blue brick arches. Below the windows, there is blue brick diaper work arranged in diamond or cross patterns.
The canted chancel apse has three matching windows, each with pairs of trefoil heads and a trefoil light at the top. The apse is accentuated by flush quoins. A small tower, situated to the south-east of the chancel, houses the vestry, which has an organ gallery above. The tower begins as a square structure and transitions to an octagonal shape at the window sill level, featuring lancets on each face, a moulded band, and a cornice topped with short Tuscan columns at the corners. The tower reaches mid nave roof level and is capped with coped gables on all eight faces. The main roof displays an eaves dentil course and a pyramid hipped end at the apse.
Inside, the nave and chancel are integrated, separated only by a moulded communion rail supported by wrought iron scrolls. There is a turned baluster rail leading to the organ gallery. The chancel's west wall includes a stone piscina, and matching holy water fonts are positioned on either side of the nave entrance. The interior features Gothic trusses resting on stone corbels, with tie rods and exposed rafters. This chapel is included for its group value.
