Description
Swettenham Mill is a water-powered mill built in 1675, as noted by a carving on a timber beam at the first floor. It has later additions from 1714 and 1765, marked by stones set low in the wall and high in the brick gable, respectively. The mill features a brick nogged timber frame and brickwork, with a roof that was originally covered in stone slates but is now fitted with machine tiles. It stands three storeys high, with four truss bays and a single bay return, creating an "L" shaped plan. The south gable-end is timber framed, and parts of two return walls are also timber, with the timbers painted on the brickwork. The main entrance on the west side consists of boarded doors on strap hinges, and there are flush casement windows. The lower parts of the walls near the water wheel are made of sandstone blocks. The initials W.S. and T.S. accompany the later dates.
Inside, the mill features a modified overshot wheel known as a Pitchback, which retains water for half its circumference. This wheel drives five sets of stones and has been adapted to power a saw and provide electricity. The interior includes oak beams and large ceiling joists, while the roof is supported by oak strutted trusses, purlins, and a ridge tree.
