Description
Margaret Barclay School for Physically Handicapped Children, formerly Mobberley Hall, was built in 1848 and subsequently altered, designed by Leonard C Howitt. The building is constructed of ashlar with a slate roof. It has a three-storey villa-style plan.
The entrance front presents a symmetrical facade with a central square porch featuring a Gothic arch and carved leaves to the spandrels which transition to an angled bay on the first floor, incorporating mullioned windows. Above the porch is a cartouche displaying a coat of arms with a ball finial. To either side of the entrance are three-light mullioned square bay windows to the lower floors, each with a gable above. The rear facade features a four-storey, octagonal turret at the centre, and a three-storey range to the north with three mullioned casements on each of the ground and first floors. A Mansard roof with hipped dormer windows serves the attic level.
A wing dating back to the early 19th century (c.1820) is present to the far left, featuring a two-storey semi-circular bay with 20th-century louvres to the ground floor. To the right of the central range sits a two-storey building with an angled bay on the ground floor, displaying two two-light mullioned casements to the first floor. A slightly projecting gabled wing is situated to the right, featuring inserted 20th-century doors on the ground floor and an oriel window above, with carved coving underneath displaying diamond-shaped panels containing foliage. A single-light casement, now blocked, is located above in the gable. A 20th-century boiler house is positioned to the left of the octagonal stair turret. A large 20th-century wing extending to the south, added to accommodate the school, is not included in this listing.
Internally, the staircase hall features arcades on the ground floor. The staircase landing incorporates three Gothic arches supported by pairs of red and green marble columns with capitals carved with birds and natural foliage. The staircase newel posts are ribbed, with alternating spiral and plain balusters. An octagonal skylight illuminates the staircase well.
