Description

The Ashes Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the late 16th to early 17th century. It is constructed with a stone plinth, timber frame with brick infill, and a slate roof. The building originally comprised two sections. It has two storeys. The front of the house features a stone plinth and random small timber framing that was originally with a middle rail. A 19th-century door is located to the right and left of the centre. Casement windows from the 19th century are also present. An 18th-century wash-house, originally a separate structure, has been joined to the farmhouse to form an extension on the left side. The right-hand gable end exhibits a full cruck roof, with spurs above the tie and collar, and a yoke. Small timber framing is visible on the lower part of the gable, with two 2-light casement windows on the ground floor and a 4-light casement window on the first floor. The rear facade displays small timber framing of 1x2 and 2x3 cells on the left side, brick walling on the remaining portion, and a 19th-century door to the right of centre. An 18th- or 19th-century addition is present on the right-hand side. Inside, there are three full crucks to the end walls and a central division. A 19th-century staircase is also found within. The building was undergoing restoration at the time of its listing in 1984.
