Description
The Ashes Cottage and Farmhouse is a former range of farm buildings that has been converted into a farmhouse, stables, and cottage. It dates from the mid-17th century and features a stone plinth with a timber frame, brick infill, and English garden wall bond brick, topped with a slate roof.
The yard front consists of 16 cells of small framing, with arch braces at the upper corners and in the 5th, 6th, 11th, and 12th upper cells. The right-hand gable end wall is from the 18th century. The left-hand gable end, which is part of a drift-way, has 5 cells of small framing with angle braces, queen posts, and angle struts to the gable. An 18th-century stable block has been added to the left.
The rear elevation mirrors the front with a similar pattern of cells, but with rendered infill. A 19th-century wash-house, which was originally separate from the house, is now connected to it on the right. At the far right, there is a 17th-century cottage that was originally separate but has been joined to the 17th-century farm building by the construction of the 18th-century stable block. This section has a stone and brick plinth and features 12 cells of small framing on the north front, with a 19th-century lean-to wash-house attached to the center of the facade.
